Gin is just seriously all the craze right at the Moment!! who cares about whisky right? well the people at McHenry Distillery still do, they are just really well known for their gin, being one of the original people a number of years ago to start making gin in a big way. Our director was one of the first to put Bill’s gin on a wine list in Hobart. It’s the most Southern Distillery in the world, the air is crisp, the gin textured & fragrant - but there is so much more here to explore. Damson Plum anyone??
Port Arthur Historic Site. Well when you have a reference quote as ‘a machine to grind rogues honest’ that’s not going to end well for the people that were sent there. It was most definitely harsh, but what about the quality of the boats they made to rival professional shipwrights which you see out on the included harbour cruise.
Your time here is self-guided, with guided walking tours running on the hour (included in the tour) with other hour departures times for the harbour cruise. There’s lots to see. Make your own decisions lest you end up permanently in one of the no light cells!! (Lunch is at guest own expense) The cafeteria offers a great range of options for you to choose from.
We have a short stop at either the Tessellated Pavement or the Eaglehawk Neck Blowhole. (Interchangeable with the Tessellated Pavement) One the most active blowholes to be found in the south of Tasmania, this blowhole is famous for the large swells that come pounding in straight from the Southern Ocean. It can be quite exhilarating to watch the sheer force of mother nature throw itself against the rock in an effortless battle to wear it away. There is also a fantastic short walk up to a lookout overlooking the Southern Ocean, which is a great place for a photo. A jacket is recommended if you want to take this walk. Stop off on you way back to sample some of the famous ice-cream from the DOO-liihus food van that is here seasonally.
(Interchangeable with the Blowhole) The Tessellated Pavement is something that is unique in the world. It is a phenomenon that only happens in a few places worldwide, and as such is a great place for a family picture or a couple of selfies. It has a mosaic like formation where the saltwater has eroded the rock to form these small crater-like squares, hence forming a ‘mosaic’ like pattern, in reference to the Roman mosaic floors that were common in that era.
With what would be a welcome stretch after all that way, we stop at Bangor Vineyard Shed. This is where we get to have a fantastic tasting of not just local Tasmanian cool climate wine, but experience some of the best o & fresh oysters you will find. The wine is delicious & produced on the property from the vines right in front of where you sit as are the oysters from just nearby. The oysters come several different ways including natural, but if you are not wanting to we can organise a hot drink or just some wine to enjoy.
Arriving back into Hobart after a wonderful day of convict heritage, pristine & complex local gin & maybe a whisky or 2, fresh as you get oysters matched to local wines, in a luxury vehicle no less, we have we hope given you a fantastic tour of the Southern Tasmanian Peninsula & we did not leave you locked in a cell at Port Arthur accidentally!!
